(2)set of reading guide questions…(1-10)

1. I think the germans chose to hang a few prisoners in public at a time when they are murdering thousands each day in the crematoriums to make them self feel good. By doing this they will be hurting the other jews that watched them do this. This probably was also a way to show how much they hated jews which also would hurt them emotionally.

2. Some examples to the changes in Elie and his father’s relationship is that at the beginning of the book they rarely talked. Sometimes seemed as if his father was barley there for him. Overtime they have developed a strong relationship. They now depend on each other because they are going through this hard time together. The realize that each other is all they have left and they want to cherish each moment.

3. I believe that this is a significant act because his father probably thought he wouldn’t see his son again. this would be a way of Elie remembering his father. i think the spoon was for food so he wouldn’t starve and the knife was for protection. I think that he means that because him and his father has to go different ways he will always remember his father and carry on with him some prized items that was important to his father.

4.Elie’s experience at Auschwitz affected his faith by probably making him like where is God when he needs help. At this point of time in his life he needs him the most and he’s not here to save him from his grief. His faith weekend and eventually he gave up his faith.

5. A german worker causes a stampede in the wagon by throwing a piece of bread on the wagon floor. The majority of the workers stumbled and trampled over each other to get the bread , this caused the ‘stampede’. His actions tells me that he is very ignorant. He knew that this act would cause confusion because everybody on the wagon was starving. This incident suggest that the prisoners are hungry and are all in need of food.

6. Some conflicts that arise regarding Elie’s father is that his father is getting weaker and needs help. when his father gets picked for the selection Elie’s does as best as he can to stay with his father. However, it’s very hard because he is healthier and gets putting in different lines then his father.

7. It was only a few months before the camp was liberated boy the american third army. His father died of dysentery, starvation, and exhaustion after being beating by a guard. Elie’s emotional state at this point was that he feels guilty and he has no more tears to shed.

8. This sentence means that he will never forget how he looked. He has survived the holocaust and it is an experience that is unforgettable to him.

9. He realized that moshe the beadle was right about all the horrifiying things he saw that day. Elie wouldn’t want you to think that just because he didnt quiet believe him at that time that you shouldnt believe his story now because it is true. He tries to make his story as deep as possible. He has been very successful because now thousands of people believe in this story and are getting deep in the history of the holocaust. Even I want to learn more about it as I get older.

10. I this the meaning of the title night is to describe how the holocaust and the concentration camps brought darkness into everyones life who went through it. Everlasting night and his nights seemed longer. …if i was to give this book another title I would call it the Darkness of the Holocaust through Elie Weisel eyes..I would call it this because this book is like a book told by Elie himself and what he went through..a personal book about his experience.

Being left alone

feeling abandoed

as if I’m not important

words can’t describe the pain

hurt, anger, and sadness

things I onced loved

I wouldn’t see them again

where did the love go

i don’t know but how

could I be loosing you forever

I stare blankly into the distance

all things I loved has vanished

while everything is gone

I have one thing left

this I will never loose

I promise

*Quote 1 .

”why do you weep when you pray”?

What I thought : I actually like this quote because it has to do with prayer. It’s a powerful thing. With Elie being a very religious teen I can relate to him a little more. I myself am a religious teen , growing up in a christian family . I to sometimes cry when I pray.

Quote 2:

”Blessed be the name of the enternal”.

What I thought: I like this quote because again with being a religious teen i love my God. Nobody comes before him and I enjoy being a christian. I do believe that his name should be blessed forever.

Quote 3:

” Don’t be afraid son, sleep . You can sleep. I’ll look after you myself”.

What I thought: I thought that this quote was very touching. They were going thru so much during this time. Elie probably felt alot of love and comfort from his father. At the beginning of the story Elie seemed lonely. He didn’t have that good father and son bond. Now they connect because they are both going thru this hard time together.

Quote 4:

”The yellow star? what of it ? you wont die of it”.

What I thought: I think this quote is very powerful. I think this because I believe that you shouldn’t be labeled as something. If you are born into something you don’t have to die being that same religion or whatever you may be. At the beginning of the book they didn’t have to wear the star of David. They could interact with different religions. At this point of the story the Jews don’t seem to really care what they look like or what they are. They just know that they want to be free.

Quote 5:

”Men to the left, Women to the right”!

What I thought: This quote actually plays a big role to me in this book. This is the seperation of male and female, wives and husbands, fathers and children. hearts were broken and some never will see each other again. Before all this happened people were able to enjoy their lives and families. Now they and separated from each other forever.

Quote 6:

” Never shall I forget that night, the first night in the camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed”.(3)

What I thought: I thought that this quote was so powerful. i thought this because I can’t even imagine how Elie felt at this time. He was probably terrified to never have a regular life again, never see his family, and to loose his life at such a young age. This quote really relates to the title to. The book is called Night , and even thought years has passed it probably felt as if this was just this constant night. at the beginning of the story he could have always had light in his life .. now there’s just eternal darkness.
